What are my favourite iGoogle Gadgets?

27Nov07

This seems like a good time to say a little about my favourite iGoogle gadgets.  Here are my current top 5.  Most of which have been on my iGoogle for quite some time, so consider them well proven goodies:

  1. BBC News - There are many good RSS feeds based on the standard Google set, which I think is well implemented.  This is my favourite.  I recently tried Google’s own News feed, but it’s just overkill.  The BBC one is a straightforward list of headlines with a ‘+’ for more info.
  2. Dilbert - I have a soft spot for Dilbert, the observations are so spot on.  If you work in a corporate office you’ll know exactly what I mean.  There are a few on iGoogle, it’s not perfect, but this is the best one I can find.
  3. National Geographic POD - There are a few National Geographic gadgets.  This one is nice and uncluttered, and you can click on the image to get to a full size wallpaper quality version.
  4. Book lovers guide - I’ve only just come across this.  It’s wonderfully simple. In essence: if you like this book, we recommend reading this book. Quick, simple and inspiring, this is what gadgets are all about.  I also admire that they are personal recommendations, not auto-generated.  Not sure if it will be a stayer though.
  5. Official YouTube - I didn’t want to be too predictable, but YouTube is a wonderful time waster, and this gadget keeps me well fed with YouTube oddities.  It also makes me feel like I’m young, hip and trendy (which I’m not, unless receding hairlines are now ‘in’).

Although the number of gadgets available is quite overwhelming, I’ve spent hours trying to find useful gadgets and still my desktop is pretty much an RSS reader with a few nice extras.  So each week I will be reporting on the diamonds I come across in the iGoogle mines.  And perhaps more importantly (for me!), my own gadgets will soon find there way onto my iGoogle - and hopefully yours too.
