Free Wordpress Installation Service

15Jul08

Well, it’s been a while. Shame I haven’t had time to keep this blog up to date, but other ventures have overtaken it. Please continue to enjoy the Google Gadgets that it hosts, and I’ll continue responding to email and doing the odd post.  There may still be more Google Gadgets too.
So what’s this about Free Wordpress Installs? Well, that’s one of my new ventures. If you’re interested in getting Wordpress installed for free, then just pop on over to WordpressFreeInstall.com

Ultrasearchula Firefox and IE7 Opensearch box

15Feb08

Ultrasearchula’s promotion is proving difficult, but the iGoogle Gadget is starting to be used more and more. I’ve been dabbling with adding more value to Ultrasearchula and the Opensearch is a great addition.

To make use of it you’ll need to be using IE7 or Firefox, then just click here to add it to your browser’s search box. The best way to use this is to use the one character prefixesUl, such as ‘s iphone‘ to find an iphone at your favorite shopping site. The main Ultrasearchula site shows the prefix characters, here’s a few of them: web, shop, auction, news, videos, books.

The Badger’s back again

13Feb08

It’s been a few weeks since the last post, though it was a great post… the ZX Spectrum iGoogle Gadget.  My personal life took a turbulent turn, so I haven’t had chance to spend time developing or even posting to the blog.  But now things are back on an even keel and I have a few small treats coming very soon.

The ZX Spectrum gadget’s been getting some great interest, with endorsement from the mighty World of Spectrum and a post on inpactvirtuel.com generating over 200 visits on one day alone! So thanks to all who have helped promote it.

ZX Spectrum Emulator and games - iGoogle Gadget

14Jan08

ZX Spectrum Emulator iGoogle Gadget

As promised, the mighty Sinclair ZX Spectrum in iGoogle gadget form.
I only realized a couple of weeks ago that last year was in fact the 25th anniversary of Sir Clive’s wonderful little 8-bit machine. I felt the need to pay homage, so built this gadget and compiled 26 of the best and most memorable ZX Spectrum 48k games, the majority of which are still very playable. A few classics to mention are Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, Daley Thompson’s Decathlon, Elite, Bubble Bobble, Bombjack and Chuckie Egg.
All the games have a link to a help page which details the original inlay and game information, so if you’re stuck trying to figure out which keys to use then click on the link. You can also get more info here.

If you’re from the 8 bit era - an early 80’s kid - then revel in nostalgia; if you’re not then enjoy some retro gaming, and just remember each of these games originally took 10 to 20 minutes to load from a cassette tape! It may seem archaic, but this is the machine that launched the games industry proper and probably seeded our IT industry with programmers too.
I have to thank Jan Bobrowski for the guts of the emulator. I merely tweaked it, packed it up into a gadget and selected the games. I hope this is destined to become an iGoogle classic, as everyone should have this on their google homepage, for the joy of an occasional 5 minutes playing Manic Miner at least. Happy retro gaming!

ooh, and if you like it, please digg it :)

ZX Spectrum iGoogle Gadget in progress

07Jan08

Between all the work on Ultrasearchula I got an urge to produce a fun Gadget… The ZX Spectrum iGoogle Gadget.  Hooray!  If you’re an early 80’s kid you’ll have already wet yourself.  It’s strange how this little machine caught the imagination of so many of us.  I guess it came at just the right time, and is probably the reason so many of us are nerds now.
For those who are bewildered by my ramblings, give it a try anyway.  The ZX Spectrum was so popular because it was actually a very good games platform, probably the first one that kids really adopted, though not by design.  Manic Miner and many others are still great games, and I’ve found myself just having the odd 5 minutes before continuing my surfing, it’s a great stress reliever to have on iGoogle.
Just packing it up and will produce an official post for it within the next few days.  Watch this space…

Ultrasearchula - Beta Release

23Dec07

OK, it’s time I spilled the beans. Ultrasearchula is now up and running in a beta state. So, as dedicated readers I thought I’d let you loose on it prior to moving forward with a full promotion. Please pop along to www.ultrasearchula.com and check it out. Let me know what you think, and I’d be most grateful if you could report any faults that you find.
I will be releasing an official iGoogle Gadget soon, meanwhile you can use this link to a pre-release version of the Gadget.

What is Ultrasearchula?

Ultrasearchula brings together all the top websites: Google, Amazon, eBay, Wikipedia, last.fm, Flickr, IMdB and many more.  Providing an all in one search box, to find what you want quickly from a single uncluttered page or gadget.  The searchable websites are categorised (Amazon in shopping, eBay in Auctions, for example), with a configurable default website for each category.  It’s also quick to use, with one click search and one key shortcuts.  For example, simply type s iphone, and press return, to search for an iphone at your favourite shopping site.

Check it out and see what you think, hopefully it’s as useful to you as it is to me.

Happy Christmas from the Badger

22Dec07

That’s enough Unspun gadgets for now.  They’re simple to create, so I’ll be popping the odd one in between the more ambitious gadgets and posts.
I’m now off for a well earn Badger Christmas away from home.  Though I might squeeze a last minute post in tomorrow morning…  So all that remains is to say Happy Christmas all!
